An Ash Water Recovery and Recycling System, commonly known as AWRS, is a closed-loop industrial setup that captures, treats and reuses the water used to transport and cool ash.

The system is primarily used in coal-fired power plants and waste-to-energy facilities where large quantities of water are required for ash slurry transportation and bottom-ash cooling.

By recovering approximately 70% to 80% of process water, the system significantly reduces dependency on raw freshwater and minimizes wastewater discharge from ash-handling operations.

How the ash-water recovery and recycling system works

Ash Dyke Decantation
Ash slurry (water mixed with fly or bottom ash) is pumped into an ash pond or dyke, where heavy particles settle.

Stilling & Mixing
Decanted water is drawn into a stilling chamber and flash mixer, where chemicals (like flocculants) are dosed to coagulate microscopic ash particles.

Clarification
The mixture enters a clariflocculator or tube settler to separate the contaminated sludge from the clean water.

Recirculation
The clarified water is pumped back into the ash-handling plant’s slurry system for continuous reuse
